Spencer Operation

Today Spencer had exploratory surgery. A few months back we found a lump in his groin. Both Lee and I and the GP straight away thought it was his hernia reopen. So the GP sent us to Birmingham Children's Hospital to see the consultant. When we were visiting with him the lump was not visible but he said because of how we were explaining it and because it was causing discomfort to Spencer they would like to do this surgery. Today was the day.

Spencer was not allowed to eat anything past 3 am and for anyone who know Spencer they will know this is very much impossible. On a typical day before lunch Spencer will have a bowl of cereal, 2 or 3 pieces of toast, a peanut butter and jam sandwich and an apple and a banana. This all before about 11 am at which time I tell him for an hour it is almost lunch. Then Lunch is a whole nother story. It normally consists of another Sandwich, Potato Waffles, some fruit, some kind of cereal / granola bar and a bag of crisps (chips) or crackers. keeping in mind that he will have had all the above food before 1pm. Yep he is a living stomach. I am not sure how he stays so thin. Next he wasn't allowed to drink anything past 7 am. So when I went to bed last night at 11:30 I woke him up and gave him a piece of toast. This morning he woke up at 6:45ish and said mommy I'm a little hungry, great start! I topped him up with as much water as I could get in him explaining that even water would make him not feel hungry.

I wasn't able to go to the hospital. Having Kaylee and Siena and no one here to look after them or get Kaylee to School I stayed home with them (another reason I cant wait to get back to the states, I am so going to love having my family on my doorstep! Yep even 3 hours drive is on your door step in the states ;) ) Lee and Spencer left at about 7:15. Lee told me that in the car they had a really cool moment when Spencer said Daddy Remember I'm going to be OK because Heavenly Fathers Angels are going to protect me.

When they arrived the nurses came in and checked Spencer over and put the "magic" cream on. (magic cream numbs their hands so when they put the IV in they feel nothing). After a little while he was complaining about the magic cream hurting when they took it off they realised that he was having a bit of an allergic reaction to it and his had was all read and swollen :( finally at noon they came into Lee and said he would be next. Keeping in mind that he still hadn't eaten anything and by this point was officially Starving. They put him in his cute little gown and off they rolled to the theater (that is what they call the operating room here) When they got there because his hands were so sore and swollen they didn't want to give him the IV until he was asleep. So they gave him gas. Lee said this was such an odd experience. After about 4 seconds he was out but his body was still making BIG involuntary movements.

Next was the waiting game. I would say Lee and I chatted off and on for about an hour. In the end both of us were getting impatient and finally Lee went quiet, an obvious sign that he was busy. The Dr came out and said they couldn't find the Hernia. To us this is good and bad news only because now we wonder what on earth the big lump in his groin was. When Lee Finally got to see Spencer he was very laid back. In fact the Nurses commented on how chilled he was. This is very different than the other operations before when he has come to he cries and cries. So I was so pleased about that.

After an hour they were able to leave to come home. Yeah. In the meantime at home Kaylee wrote Spencer a lovely card which read:

To Spencer,
I love you so so much and I hope you feel better and walk properly soon.

I will always be there for you when you need me.

Lots of Love, Kaylee

She was so concerned for him. She was worried about him not being able to eat. Then when Lee said he is VERY Wobbly on his feet she was worried about him walking. She kept saying I just want him to come home so that I know he is OK. She is such a little love. Always concerned for everyone else.

Since Spencer has been home he has been wobbly on his feet. he has two incisions on his tummy and he keeps complaining that his tummy hurts. He cant sit up on his own because the muscles are sore and he cant bend down to pick anything up. He also cant use the toilet at the moment because it hurts his tummy to use the muscles. Poor little man.

And so just as the Dr Prescribed lots of Calpol (children's Tylenol) and ibuprofen. No showers or baths for 5 days. No running, jumping on trampoline or pretty much acting like a child (yep this will be hard).

And as mommy prescribed Lots of love, cuddles, watching movies together and being treated little the special little prince he is!

Just arived at the hospital and waiting to be taken to the ward.

He's offical. He has his hospital band on his arm, which he couldnt wait to get off, and the magic cream on his hands. This was before it started to hurt him.

They had to make a mark on his leg so they knew which side. He was so excited because Mommy never lets him draw on himself. He told them it tickled. But also he was very shy and embrassed that the nurse made him strip to his pants. Just wait until he is older and realises all our blogging buddies have now seen him in his pants too ;)

Gown on and ready to go down to theater. Sexy legs. Whoot Whoo! ;)

Just out of suregry a little bit and finally enjoying a sandwich mommy had sent with him. You can tell he was pretty drugged up in this picture still.

WOW, you know you really should let your family know when your kids are having surgery, I hope he is feeling better. Even in the hospital he has such a cute personality, you can see it in the pictures! Give him a hug and kiss for me!
