Wanna Quick Book to Read?...

A dear friend of mine lent me a book. She knows I enjoy reading and as she gave it to me she said this is just a short book it wont take you long to read. I have read it now in about an hour. She was right it was such an easy read. The name of the book is Believe in What You're Doing Believe in Who You Are by Hilary Weeks. Some of you may know Hilary Weeks from her music. Lee and I have a Christmas CD of hers. I think this book is a fantastic book to read especially at the first of the year. But then as I was reading it I thought what a better person I would be if I read this book every day. I thought I would share a few of my favorite things from this book (If I could I would type the whole thing on here for everyone to read.)

The first bit was about prayers. There are two things that I loved which she said. First "I learned the answer is not to run from our fears but to face our fears knowing the Lord is on our side." And Second "Believe that he hears you and that each prayer that rises to heaven returns answered." Sometimes I wonder if my prayers are being answered. But I know that they are. Of course they are. Just not always the way I want them to be answered. The Lord knows what is best for each of us. He doesnt always give us what we want but more what we need when we need it. It always happens in his time which for me is hard to understand!

The Next thing I LOVED was when she was talking about always worrying about what others think of her. Then she said that one day the spirit whispered this to her "Dont worry about what others think of you. Worry about what they think of themselves when they are with you." WOW!! How much better would we feel about ourselves, or how much smoother would our lives run if we stopped thinking about what others thought about us? I dont know about you but I try my hardest to be a good person. To do what Heavenly Father and Jesus would want me to do. To be the wife and mother that I know I should be. Why then if I know I am trying my best do I worry about what others think of me? If I want to be an even better person I would focus all my energy on trying to make others feel great about themselves when they are around me. That quote is so going somewhere that I can see it every day! So simple yet so profound! She says "Believe that as you look for the good in others you'll find it in yourself."

She then talks about scripture study. I dont know about you but for me scripture study is done each day from the Scripture readers. We read every night with the children from the Book of Mormon Reader, or other scripture equivalent. I never get time to read on my own. I feel that I wouldnt have the time to read a whole chapter every night. Most night I dont even have 5 minutes to read. This book had the coolest analogy though. She said this "Scripture study is like cinnamon. It doesn't take very much cinnamon to flavor a whole recipe and make it taste good. It takes just a little scripture study to make our whole day good." So I dont have much time for personal scripture study. But I am going to start now reading 1 verse a day from the "adult" scriptures. I am certain it will make the world of difference in my life.

The last thing that I want to mention from this book is a quote about the spirit. She quotes Parley P Pratt "The Spirit quickens all the intellectual faculties, increases, enlarges, expands, and purifies all natural passions and affections, and adapts them by the gift of wisdom, to their lawful use. It inspires, develops, cultivates, and matures all the fine toned sympathies, joys, tastes, kindred feelings, and affections of our nature. It inspires virtue, kindness, goodness, tenderness, gentleness, and charity. It develops and invigorates all the faculties of the physical and intellectual man. It strengthens and invigorates and gives tone to the nerves. In short, it is, as it were, marrow to the bone, joy to the heart, light to the eyes, music to the ears, and life to the whole being." I think that is amazing. Who wouldnt want the Holy Ghost as their most loyal friend? For me that is something that I want.... No Something that I NEED in my life.

There are a lot more fantastic things to read from this book. If you have a spare minute and $9.95 laying around. I would strongly suggest you get this book and read and ponder it. What a great way to start off a New Year.
